Hiking on the West Coast Trail

Hiking on the West Coast Trail

This trip is all about experiencing the very best of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve—on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. We will hike and paddle through its rugged coastline, misty forests, and sand-pebble beaches.  You will be immersed in the history of this coastal environment with light houses that are a century old, trees that are over 1000 years old and First Nations village middens that started 9000 years ago. All surrounded by 25,000 year old temperate rainforests of salal, ferns and cedar. We will encounter various whales, otters, eagles, and maybe bears and wolves. There will be opportunity to meet other visitors and experience the unique uplifting social nature of the park. The kayaking will be on mostly protected and calm waters surrounded by the inner islands and also include short crossings where you feel the swell of the open Pacific Ocean.

This trip accesses the West Coast trail via water taxi at Nitinat Narrows and goes south to the Carmanah Point Lighthouse. From there we hike the shoreline north for 4 days passing the famous Tsusiat Falls, and many ship wrecks to the trails end at Pachena Bay. After a fresh meal, showers and a night near Bamfield we will water taxi over to the Broken Group Islands. The initial sea kayak instruction and safety session is followed 4 days of paddling through the protected waters of Barkley Sound.

-The trail is rugged so good hiking fitness is required, but no previous kayaking experience is needed.
