Four (4) Day Course: January 28th to 31st, 2019

Pricing: $650 for four (4) day course, or only $425 for Whistler (Sea to Sky) locals.

Now you have your AST1 Certification and are venturing further and further into the nether regions of our beautiful mountains every winter. This is the time to take your ski touring and avalanche skills training to the next level. This four (4) day course, will take you deep into the backcountry between Whistler and north of Pemberton (off the Duffy), with a combination of field and theory lessons, and the possibility of a planned overnight stay at one of our local huts (depending on weather, hut availability, and the groups’ schedules/motivation), with our very own Association of Canadian Mountain Guides/ CAA Professional Member (Canadian Avalanche Association) Certified Instructor. and over 30 years experience in the Sea to Sky backcountry.

What you will learn in an AST 2:

  • Progressive route planning, navigation and travel techniques.

  • How to conduct a snow stability test in the field and interpret the results.

  • The basics of trip planning and staying safe in the back country.

  • Proficiently carry out companion rescue for multiple burials

  • Use appropriate travel techniques in avalanche terrain

  • Key techniques for using the Danger Rating on a local scale

  • Key techniques for applying the Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale (ATES) technical model to develop personal, local terrain ratings and understanding terrain exceptions.

Equipment:  

  • Full back-country Ski equipment, with touring bindings and skins, or splitboard with skins. (Required for all 4 days)

  • Avalanche Safety Kit (avalanche transceiver, collapsible shovel, and probe). (Required for all days)

  • Clothing for winter environment in temps down to -15. (Required for both days)

  • Pack Lunch and snacks.

  • Transport and possible lift access passes not included

Instructor will be equipped with guide pack (first aid/rescue/communications/repair stuff)


Skill: 

  • AST1 Certification required

  • Moderate fitness needed.

  • Intermediate to advanced skiing/snowboarding experience level.

  • Previous back-country experience preferred, but not required.
