Staying Safe during Backcountry Activities.
This is a different type of survival course. It is NOT about catching rabbits! Its a one day combination of all essentials for navigation and emergency management for recreational backcountry travel. In the mountains or on the ocean. Taught by a Whistler SAR member with 25 years experience.
$600 Day for up to 6 people.
We have been teaching these courses since the 90’s. All are Taught by a fully certified acmg ski/Hiking guides.
This is an introductory clinic designed to equip you with the skills and confidence for have a great day out but also making having effective response to ‘misadventures’ in backcountry/wilderness winter environments. This full-day clinic will provide participants with a mix of classroom theoretical review and on-the-snow (ground- for now…) practical skills:
-Packing the 10 essentials, and the importance of enough clothing
-Leaving an effective route plan
-Understanding navigation tools
-Defining your location with Lat/Long & UTM by map & Phone GPS
-Backcountry communications: Sat Phone/PLB/InReach/VHF Radio/Cell Phone/Flares/Whistle/Voice
-Effectively signaling for rescue (who to call, what do they want?)
-Preparing injured persons for SAR rescue and helicopter extraction prep
-How to make yourself visible/ready for rescue. Use of flares.
-Surviving for extended periods 1 day/+1 night/+another day…
-Put up a tarp to withstand conditions
-Dig a snow shelter/make a Quincy snow home
-Make a fire

What's included:
Full days of courses. For groups of up to 6 or 8 people depending on program. We supply all the regular guiding management equipment. We will also organize (for an additional cost) transportation out of Whistler and food and drink for the day.
What you bring:
Touring Gear and Avalanche Safety Equipment. DSK Guiding will provide a comprehensive gear list and personal coaching to assist in making good choices to help create a very light backpack.
Our Cancellation Policy is different for all trips. DSK Guiding wants to give you the opportunity and freedom to change plans. However, organizing and running trips does involve our financial commitment. We will always strive to fill a vacated trip placement and provide a 95% refund (less any banking related fees, 5% held to cover administrative costs). Your happiness with any of our services is most important.
We reserve the right to cancel or change a booking or trip at any time before the start date with a 100% refund (less any banking related administrative fees) to the customer. DSK Guiding cannot be held accountable for any expenses incurred due to trip cancellations or changes. We recommend you consider purchasing 3rd party trip cancellation insurance to protect yourself from unforeseeable issues.
Day Trips:
Time of purchase until 24 hours before the trips start time: 95% refunded (less any banking related administrative fees, 5% held to cover administrative costs).
Less than 24 hours before the start time of a trip: No refund guaranteed.
Multi-Day Trips: 12 months - 1 month prior to start of trip: 50% deposit to secure a placement is 95% refunded (less any banking related administrative fees, 5% held to cover administrative costs).
1 month - trip start date. 100% payment has no refund guaranteed.
